The True Bastards is book two in The Lot Lands series by Jonathan French. I really enjoyed the first one about the hoof of half-orcs mounted on giant hogs battling to keep their slice of wilderness safe from a variety of threats.

This second book is just as entertaining but Mr. French really steps up his game in just about every way/5. The book is in three sections: the first section covers the damage being done to the Western public lands because of unfettered cattle grazing; the second section covers the hows and whys of many of the species facing extinction in the West - sage grouse, grizzlies, wild buffalo, wild horses, Aggasiz' desert tortoise; and the third section /5.
